I eat here once every couple weeks. Never a disappointing meal. Very authentic, delicious perogies!
I ordered 2 cabbage rolls and 3 potato pancakes. I waited for 20 min to get it. He takes one order, gets the pay, goes in the back and does whatever to get the order for the customer - only one customer at a time. Cost me $18.90. Got back to work and found I had 1 cabbage roll and 3 perogies. NOT what I ordered. I called the deli and the man told me that's not what I ordered. I hung up. He phoned my work and told me I had left by the time he brought the potato pancakes. It took me almost 5 min to make sure I had the two containers in my bag properly so nothing would spill. he said my pancakes were waiting for me. Lot of good that does. I will NEVER go back, the food may be good but the ethic is not an honest. Seriously if you go there, be sure to check your order before you leave. Especially as it is not cheap. Well … now it seems a challenge to try and post this review.
As someone who grew up on Ukrainian food, this place nails it and then some. GREAT pierogies and everything else too!
Best pierogies in town, handmade by a very nice older gentleman. We regularly keep some in our freezer for whenever we get a craving. The dessert pierogi are surprisingly delicious.
I really wanted to love this place. The perogies were homemade with good flavour. But the cabbage roll I had was lacking flavour and was a little too undercooked inside. It's a few hours later and I'm my stomachs not feeling that great and I fear the cabbage roll may be responsible. I would try this place again since it may have just been a dud cabbage roll. But I think next time I would stick to perogies and sausage.
Poland in Canada!
I make sure to come for fantastic pierogies, cabbage rolls, and borscht every time I visit downtown Victoria. The new location may be difficult to find, it's in a cozy little shopping arcade next to the office building, look for the sandwich board!
Wonderfully delicious and comforting!Brought back memories of childhood suppers at my grandmother's house.
Excellent white borscht with delicious sourdough bread. Totally authentic and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended!
Great European Deli! Perogies are best in town.
Tasty, tasty pierogies and cabbage rolls just like my mom's and grandmother's. I go weekly for the 5 pierogy combo that comes with a sausage, a cabbage roll and a bowl of kapusnyak. I keep trying to change my order and try something else but I can't. Oh, but I did have the 12" Polish sub once... I almost couldn't finish it.
Great food for a good price! I feel like the service could be improved though.
Everything that I've tried here to date has been delicious. The perogies both frozen and fresh have that amazing homemade taste which has me coming back again and again. The combos here are incredible value and very filling.Pro tip: get the frozen pork perogies, take them home and fry them with a little butter. Soooo good!
Love the cabbage rolls, love the perogies. Delicious food, great prices. Like eating at your Ukrainian/polish grandmas house
Best homemade polish/Ukrainian food ever! giant cabbage rolls too! Will come to Victoria again just to eat here again.
Great food and really personable and sweet owner! I will come back next time I'm on the island.
Delicious and authentic food served with friendly and hospitable service!
I just happened to be walking past thier new location in the shopping acalade on Yates. Best bit of luck I have had in a while and even better food.
Best perogies bar none. Genuine Eastern European home cooking.
Had the 5 perogies, sausage, cabbage roll, and soup combo and shared it for a small-medium sized lunch. Everything was very tasty.
Terrible food, terrible service and a terrible owner. I tried the perogies once and they tasted like the ones from costco. This guy is horrible to his staff. I have seen him yelling at them in front of customers. Terrible business person, he shut down in Sidney and blamed the neighbors, shut down on Douglas street, of course because of the neighbors. I am sure he will be closed on Yates street in no time at all as there are never any customers there.
Older gentlemen behind the counter was extremely impolite and had visible grease on his hands as he cooked my food, did not see him preform any basic hygiene in the time I was there. I also received mild stomach pains and severe diarrhea the night after eating there.
I had food at this deli when they were located on Douglas St. , it was just okay. Being Polish myself, I did not like the cabbage rolls. Pierogies were decent. The place always seemed empty, I know the owner has been blaming the pot shops around but it was empty even before those shops opened. The owner seems to attack anyone who does not agree with him. Just looking over the comments here there are a lot of negative and unprofessional replies from him. I found it interesting that the owner was running for city Mayor and his entire platform was based on "attacking and eliminating" things. He blames everything and everyone for his failing business but himself. Sad.
Recommended by my Eastern Europe Ancestry family members. And this old wasp. Stop here to take a meal to the waiting line for MV Coho. Poppy seed roll is a special treat
I have only been here once (hence 4 stars instead of 5, want to get more samples before I go to 5) but enjoyed a very delicious hot red borscht (vegetarian!) and also some nice pierogies served with sour cream. I would like to go back often, but very sadly, it seems that the neighbors next door (a cannabis shop) are unhappy with their current amount of space and aggressively are pushing out what is the only true place in Victoria for Polish cuisine. I also found the owner to be nice and enjoyed talking to another Polish person who was in the restaurant and I had just met. At the suggestion of the kind owner, they sat with me and provided great company.
A really great example of a really bad restaurant!
Great food! I like the pierogies (of course) and cabbage rolls. The sauerkraut soup is also a favourite of mine. Healthy food with no preservatives. Recommended.
Grabbed some frozen soups, super disappointing.
Authentic homemade European classics.
If I could give this place negative 6 stars, I would. Not only were the perogies bland, soaking wet in oil, filled with lumpy potatoes, and coated in a film of dry dill, giving it the feeling of swallowing live slugs, but the sausage tasted like boiled hot dog. I gave this man a $5 tip for boiled hotdog. However, the worst part of this whole adventure was the intense food poisoning I received the next day. It was like Niagara falls, Canada, USA, GUSHING from my mouth and anus. I missed work. My sphincter still remembers the trauma this disgusting meal inflicted on it. My rectum requires not only physical, but emotional therapy. I have spoken to many people who have not been brave enough to review this miserable place who have also received food poisoning, and the general consensus is that we will never be returning. If you want delicious perogies, go to Sult.
Excellent food, very authentic. Nice owners.
Absolutely charming little place - I stopped in for lunch on the weekend with a friend and for less than $30 we had a fantastic meal with pierogies, the most flavourful sauerkraut soup, a smooth white borscht, sausage and huge cabbage roll each. It’s a wonderful spot for delicious comfort food served with care.
The sauerkraut soup was excellent, as were the hand-crafted pierogies. What a delicious dinner. This is a gem of a shop and we wish you the best of success!
Very slow service, very rude ownerMy order took 15 minutes and came undercooked. The owner started berating me and said that I should have told him how to cook it ??? I now have looked up his VIHA reviews and found CRITICAL VIOLATIONS. I see that I will be accused of leaving a fake review - I guess the VIHA reviews will be considered fake by this owner as well. This is a TERRIBLE business owned by a TERRIBLE person who knows nothing about the food business and cares even less about food safety and customers health YUCK !!!!!
The pierogies contained a fluffy and delicious filling. They were topped with caramelized onions and fresh dill. One of the best lunches I've had in recent memory. We also bought some frozen ones to eat at home later, though as soon as we got back I had to boil up a few. I can say that the frozen pierogies tasted just as good as the fresh ones and are miles ahead of any you could find in the grocery store!I'll be coming back soon.
I walked in off the street because of the sign that said 10% off for loyal customers! I immediately joined Mr.Zmuda's loyalty program. What an engaging and intelligent business owner. I didn't have a lot of time to chat with him, but I am absolutely entranced by the frozen perogies he has on offer AND I am looking forward to trying his Borscht! Will be back to feast like a European KING when I am in that neck of the woods. Thanks Mr.Chris for inviting me into your store. Don't worry Sir! Things are looking up! It really can't be helped! It's always darkest before the dawn!
Perogies are the best I've ever had!
Food here was okay at best. I had the sauerkraut soup, which was my fav thing in the meal. It was warm, good taste. The pork schnitzel was a bit of a disappointment. It lacked in crispiness, and was tooooo salty. Potato dumplings were lacking in flavour and just felt gelatinous. Red cabbage was cold but okay. Was really hoping that this would fill part of the hole that the Rathskeller left behind. Sadly, it did not.It is clear by the response of the owner that he doesn’t care for customer feedback and rather attack reviews. From his response and reading the responses he has made to others, I would not ever return. Clearly there are better business owners in this city that would deserve our time, and purchases.
Really unclean food preperation, saw the old guy making them wipe his nose and no handwashing or gloves used. Walked out before paying after seeing that
The best place on the island, serving authentic Polish food!!
Best Eastern European food I have ever had! The service was great and the food served with a smile. The food and the portions are probably the best bang for your buck in Victoria! I would recommend this place to anyone! Delicious!
Onions were good, perogies were very, very bland. $10 was not worth it. The sushi place next door, or the soup place next door on the other side have more flavor. If this is authentic polish cuisine i'm not missing much.
I don't know what to say about this place good food??? No atmosphere, except the owner.. hmmmmm the people I ate with gave a will try again.
